Private Tutoring, the Fine Print
Goals
Try to come up with goals as to what you want to get out of your
session before coming. What will tell you if you have achieved those
goals? Be sure to think about how you are going to tell if the
tutoring is helping you.
Your Duties
Come prepared! Think about specific questions or problems you are
having with the material. If you want to go over a test or quiz,
bring that test or quiz. Bring your textbook or any assigned
reference material, if possible. Bring writing materials, calculator,
and paper.
Your Parents
I work with both students and parents in as open a manner as possible. This means that I will gladly discuss student progress with parents, but prefer the student to be in the room at that time as well. Similarly, I will not keep secrets about academic progress or problems from the parents.
Fees & Payment
My fees are based on current standards of my profession. I have a sliding scale of $45 to $100 dollars per hour. I encourage you to pick any rate in this range that you are comfortable with and that you think is fair. I can tutor more than one person at a time, if you want to form a study group and have a smaller per-person rate. So, for example, three students for eighty minutes would be anywhere from $50 to $130, total, or roughly $18 to $44 dollars per person. I accept cash or checks.
Phone Calls and E-mail
I will happily answer quick questions or give advice over the phone or via email. There is no charge for this unless the call takes over fifteen minutes or if the emails become alarmingly frequent. In these cases, I will prorate your hourly fee.
Recommended Session Times
I recommend sessions be around eighty minutes, although an hour is fine, and longer is fine. Frequency depends on circumstance, but once a week is not uncommon. Occasional meetings just prior to major assessments are also fine. If you are late, time cannot usually be made up and it will shorten the length of the session.
Location
Any supervised or public location in the East Bay is fine, and should be arranged along with the appointment time. For places outside of the East Bay, I may request some compensation for my transit time.
Referrals
If someone uses my services and says you referred them to me, even if they only do a single session, you get a session half off!
Cancellation Policy
You can cancel any appointment with at least 24 hours notice. If you cancel with less notice than this, or fail to show up for a session, then you are liable for half the session fee.
Change
I reserve the right to change my policies, but in such cases if you are a current client you will be warned in advance and/or have the choice of being "grandfathered in" or change to the new policy.
